Harold Bull's Engine Page
As most members will know, we have a new(ish) member, Harold Bull, who makes spectacular model engines. Here are some photos, with brief description.
Harold had no drawings or plans for these engines. He built them as he went along from his own thoughts, in his 6' X 8' shed. He has a 6" Little John lathe & a small bench milling machine.
The 4 cylinder engine is 60cc with a bore & stroke of 26.2mm X 27.77mm. Ignition is by glow plugs, & the fuel is methanol & nitromethane mix with synthetic oil for lubrication.
Harold decided on over head cam shaft with tooth belt drive to operate the valves.
The V8 engine is 185cc bore & stroke is 33mm X 30mm, ignition is also glow plugs & runs on the same fuel mix. Harold made a wood pattern for the cylinder block & had it cast in alluminium for me at Westland Castings. He made steel liners for the cylinder bores,
the pistons are machined from alluminium bar with home made cast iron rings. He also decided on over head cam shafts. It has it's own starter motor .
The V twin engine is a Harley Davidson look-a-like which is 60cc with a bore & stroke of 33mm X 35mm and all machined from solid alluminium. Ignition is glow plugs & also runs on the same fuel.
Note the handlebars. The throttle on the right hand grip is operational.
Harold also makes stunning aircraft. Here is his Mitchell, shortly before a spectacular arrival!
